Composit Dates - are they really dates?

I’ve created a Text Composite, with an output base format of Date (it outputs one of two date properties based on a condition).
I’ve added it to Search (from/to dates) & List widgets in a Widget Group.
Entering dates in the search fields doesn’t work (no records returned), and the order of the dates in the list is completely random even though I’ve set this field to be the ordering field:
